I am interning for the company OurComm run by Achumboro Ataande. I’m going to be working with Dossey Richards. I hope to learn more about web development from him as he has done many projects in the past. I’m expected to learn at a steady pace and ask questions when necessary, not to ask every time I can’t figure it out. They want me to develop as a developer and attempt to find things on my own.
We work from a co-working space in SoHo named The Farm. Everyone there talks to each other and it’s a great place for networking. Since it’s a shared space each desk does cost money so most of the time we work in the lobby since they only have the two desks and normally there are four of us there. On the weekends we work in the back because the place throws an evens every Saturday. I am expected to sign in each time and keep my area clean and not disturb the other companies. There is a cleaning lady so you don’t need to wash the shared cups and plates that they offer.
I’m expected to learn bootstrap which is a framework for CSS, Jade and Nodejs. I also have to be able to understand Jquery because it will be used once in a while. I’m only focusing on the Front-end and Dossey will do the back-end. So far I have made a few pages and mostly spent time doing 1 big page as a warm up for a couple of weeks that incorporates everything. We work mostly in silence I’m allowed to wear headphones while I code to listen to music, it is encouraged.
Moving forward I will be making more pages and Dossey will start showing me back-end stuff because I am picking up on things fast. Achumboro lets Dossey teach me however he wants and doesn’t interfere much. It’s a laid back environment and as long as I am working there are no issues. I only have to dress ’professionally’ when we attend workshops or meetings.
